Freedom of information

The work of the CMCS includes a strong focus of interest in freedom of expression and freedom of information. The Center has organized several events on the theme, including the following workshops:

7-8 December 2009

• Civil Society and the Right to Access to State-held Information: Responses to Recent European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Decisions

Co-organised with the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU/TASZ), with the support of the OSCE Office of the Representative on Freedom of the Media, and in cooperation with the Departments of Legal Studies, Public Policy and Environmental Sciences and Policy of the Central European University.  

December 12-14, 2008

• From Public Data on Sunshine to Sunshine on Public Data: Global Norms on Access to Environmental Information: A Point of Departure for Improving International Access to Information

Co-organized with Access-Info Europe, with the support and particiption of the OSCE Office of the Representative on Freedom of the Media and UNECE-United Nations Economic Commission for Europe - Environment, Housing and Land Management Division.

CMCS Senior Research Fellow Peter Molnar specializes in issues around access to information, freedom of communication and libel law. He has advized the Hungarian government on these issues and regularly analyzes national and EU policy in this field.
